For mothers who do not breast-feed, an approved infant formula is the only alternative. Infant formulas are a complete food for the bottle-fed baby. Diluted milk mixtures or formulas based on evaporated or condensed milk are no longer considered suitable for ifnant feeding.
Infant formulas can also be used to supplement breast-feeding where necessary. They are also a more appropriate alternative to cows' milk for the older infant. Whey-based infant formulas are the first choice if mothers do not breast-feed, and casein-based infant formulas are generally used if the baby appears not to be satisfied on a whey-based milk.
